Guide for Graduates
Guide for Graduates
Congratulations!
You are facing a new chapter in your life. Maybe you already have a job on hand, maybe you will be looking for a job or continuing with your part-time student job. Either way, this guide is relevant for you.
In the transition from student to graduate, there are a number of important dates and deadlines you need to keep track of, in order to approach the next chapter of your life with peace of mind.
The date you receive your last grade is important
When you became a student member, you indicated the expected date of your graduation. There are several ways you can finish your studies:
- An oral exam
- A written exam
- A thesis or bachelor project. In this case, the date of your last exam is when you have obtained your grade, or your supervisor and examiner have signed a pre-approval.
Once you know the exact date, you need to change your status from studerende (student) to nyuddannet (graduate).
If you postpone the completion of your studies
If you postpone the completion of your studies by more than 1 month, you need to extend your free student membership. That way you can avoid receiving a membership fee invoice.
You will need to fill out the form Forlængelse af gratis studiemedlemskab (Extension of the free student membership) at Mit AKA, where you can enter your new expected completion date.
You will find links to the above-mentioned forms at the end of the guide.
If you have completed your undergraduate studies and will begin your graduate studies
If you are completing a bachelor’s degree and you are continuing onto your graduate studies either in Denmark or abroad, we recommend that you change your membership status to nyuddannet (graduate). You will find a link to the form at the end of this guide. On the same form, you can indicate that you are continuing onto your graduate studies.
This way, you will be guaranteed unemployment benefits if you decide to cancel your graduate program. Once you change your status to nyuddannet (graduate), we will ensure that your free membership continues during your graduate studies. You can have a free student membership of an unemployment insurance fund for up to 5 years.
Change your status no later than 14 days after you receive your last grade
Once you know the exact date of the completion of your education, you need to change your status from studerende (student) to nyuddannet (graduate). If you know that you will finish within the next month, but do not know the exact date, please wait until you know the exact date.
You must change your status within 14 days of receiving your last grade. This applies to all recent graduates, whether or not you have a job after graduating.
When you meet the 14-day deadline, you will be able to receive unemployment benefits.
You can change your status by filling out the form Skift medlemsstatus fra studerende til nyuddannet (Change membership status from student to graduate) at Mit AKA (you can find a link to the form at the end of this guide).
If you have had a full-time job during your studies
and earned more than 20,000 DDK per month, please call us before you change your status. Because of your job, you may be able to receive an unemployment benefit rate as employee (lønmodtager). In that case you must change your status to lønmodtager instead of nyuddannet.
If you are not a student member
If you have not been a student member during your studies, the same 14-day rule applies to secure your rights to unemployment benefits as a graduate. In this case, you should apply for membership by completing the form Become a member of Akademikernes A-kasse. You can find a link to the form at the end of this guide.
You will then be eligible to receive unemployment benefits 1 month + 1 day after you receive your last grade. At that time, you will need to register as unemployed at jobnet.dk.
Register as unemployed at jobnet.dk, if you do not have a job
When you have been a student member for 1 year or more, you can receive unemployment benefits from the day after you receive your last grade. However, this requires that you register at jobnet.dk that same day.
If you have a job on hand
If you have a job on hand directly after you complete your studies, you must change your status to nyuddannet (graduate) as soon as possible after graduating and no later than 14 days after you receive your last grade. This way, you can apply for unemployment benefits if you are without a job later on.
If you have a job on hand, and are starting later than right after you graduate, you will still need to change your status to nyuddannet (graduate) no later than 14 days after you receive your last grade. You will be able to apply for unemployment benefits in the period from when you graduate and until you start your job. This requires that you also register as unemployed at jobnet.dk the day after you receive your last grade and notify the us, when you will be starting your job. You do this on the self-service section of aka.dk (Mit AKA). Click on Jeg har fået job (I got a job).
If you have been a student member less than 1 year
In order to receive unemployment benefits, you need to register as unemployed at jobnet.dk.
If you have been a student member for 1-11 months, you have to register as unemployed exactly 1 month + 1 day after you receive your last grade, which is the day from which you are eligible to receive unemployment benefits. Please remember to change your status from student to graduate no later than 14 days after you received our last grade.
If you have been a student member for 11-12 months when you graduate, you can receive unemployment benefits from the day where you have been a member for 1 year. Please remember to change your status from student to graduate no later than 14 days after you received our last grade.
After graduating you have to pay for your membership
When you are no longer a student, you will have to pay for the membership at Akademikernes A-kasse. This is the case from the first day after you have received your last grade. Therefore, it is important that you let us know if you postpone the completion of your studies. This way, you avoid receiving a membership fee invoice.
Approximately 14 days before the payment deadline, you receive the first request for payment via e-Boks. We recommend you sign up for Betalingsservice (automatic payment), but you can only do so after paying via e-Boks the first time. You pay in advance, for one quarter at a time.
Special situations if you are unemployed after graduating
Going on holiday after graduating
Maybe you plan on going on holiday after you graduate. In that case, you should register as unemployed on jobnet.dk after your holiday. When you register as unemployed on jobnet.dk you must be ready to take a job or to participate in meetings with us - and this is not the case if you are on holiday.
If you choose to go on holiday a little later, you must report your holiday to the job center.
If you are sick at the time of graduation
If you are sick at the time when you receive your last grade, you should not register as unemployed on jobnet.dk, but contact your job center to register as sick, so that you can receive sickness benefits.
If you become sick on the day you have registered as unemployed on jobnet.dk, you must register as sick on younet.dk. If you do so, you can receive unemployment benefits for the first 14 days. If you are sick for a longer period, you can receive sickness benefits from the municipality (kommune).
Timeline
Write down the important dates in your calendar
Using this example of a timeline, please observe these important tasks and dates:
Student job
You can continue with your part-time student job while unemployed. In that case, you can apply for supplementary unemployment benefits.
Be aware that you risk receiving a 3-week (111 hours) quarantine without benefits if you resign from your student job.
Here you can read more about what to be aware of regarding student jobs.
If you continue in your student job
You can continue with your part-time student job while unemployed. In this case, you can apply for supplementary unemployment benefits. You do this by indicating that you are continuing in a job when you fill out your application for benefits (ledighedserklæring).
You must be able to quit tomorrow
To receive supplementary benefits, you must be available to the labour market. This means you must be able to resign from your student job and start a job with more hours the next day.
If you have a notice period, you can meet the availability requirement by having your employer sign a release certificate (frigørelsesattest). A notice period means that you are required to stay at your job for a certain period, usually a month, after you resign.
The release certificate allows your employer to release you from your notice period, meaning you can stop working without notice if you are offered a job with more hours.
We must receive a signed release certificate from you no later than 5 weeks after you become eligible for unemployment benefits. Otherwise, we will only be able to pay benefits from the date we receive the release certificate. If Your Student Job Expires or You Are Laid OffIf Your Student Job Expires or You Are Laid Off
You can find a link to the release certificate at the bottom of this guide.
If your student job expires or your employment is terminated
If your student job depends on your student status, or if your employer terminates your employment, you can apply for supplementary unemployment benefits and continue in your job until your employment ends. It’s important that you do not resign from your student job yourself, even if the job is conditional on your student status.
If you resign from your student job
If you resign from your student job yourself, you risk a 3-week quarantine for being voluntarily unemployed. This applies if:
-
You have been a member of an unemployment insurance fund (e.g., Akademikernes A-kasse) for more than 1 year on your last working day, and
-
You are eligible for benefits based on your work (i.e., you have earned the right to unemployment benefits as a wage earner).
You will not receive a quarantine if you have a valid reason for resigning.
If you have been a member of an unemployment insurance fund (e.g., Akademikernes A-kasse) for less than one year when you complete your education, you can only receive benefits as a recent graduate 1 month + 1 day after receiving your final grade. Also, if you have been a member for less than a year, you must have resigned and left your student job before finishing your education. Otherwise, you will face a 3-week quarantine. This quarantine is in addition to the 1 month + 1 day waiting period because of your short membership duration.
You cannot use a quarantine period to take a vacation. During this time, just like when receiving unemployment benefits, you must be available for work, registered as unemployed on jobnet.dk, attend meetings, apply for jobs, and update your job log.

Language requirement for new graduates
All graduates must possess a level of Danish equal to Dansk 2 in order to receive unemployment benefits. You have met the language requirement if you have completed a degree taught in Danish. See also this list of how to meet the language requirement (opens in a new tab).
If you do not meet the language requirement
you can also meet the requirement by having at least 600 hours of employment before applying for unemployment benefits.
The 600 hours have to be distributed over 12 months within the last 24 months before you register as unemployed. It does not have to be 12 consecutive months.
You can include paid hours that are outside your membership period, but the hours must be reported to SKAT. You can use working hours from another EEA country, but at least 150 of the paid hours must come from subsequent work in Denmark. The requirement of 600 hours (tilknytningskravet) must be met again in the event of a new right to unemployment benefit as a graduate.
