How Much Does a Membership Cost?
Get an overview of your membership and unemployment insurance fund (a-kasse) fees. We are among Denmark’s least expensive unemployment insurance funds for academics. It’s free to be a student member.
The price for a full-time membership of Akademikernes A-kasse is DKK 499 per month (2025).
In reality, it’s only DKK 349 per month, as you receive a tax deduction of approximately 30 per cent for your unemployment insurance fund membership.
SKAT automatically applies the deduction at the end of the year.
The table below shows how the quarterly membership fee is structured for different types of membership (full-time, part-time, with and without early retirement benefits (efterløn):
Most of your membership fee to Akademikernes A-kasse goes directly to the state. Only DKK 103 per month of the DKK 499 you pay for membership goes to administration and payroll costs for our staff.
On this page, you can learn about what your membership fee covers, the savings you achieve by choosing Akademikernes A-kasse, and other relevant information.
What your membership fee goes to (2025):
- State contribution: DKK 389
- Contribution to ATP: DKK 7
- Contribution to the operation of the unemployment insurance fund: DKK 103
That amounts to DKK 499 monthly (DKK 1,497 per quarter in 2025).
The state contribution and ATP rate are the same for all unemployment insurance funds. The membership fee is collected quarterly in advance, and we report it automatically to SKAT.
Your membership fee is tax-deductible.

Newly graduated unemployed members pay less for membership
At Akademikernes A-kasse, we have decided to reduce the membership fee for all newly graduated unemployed members who are also receiving a reduced unemployment benefit rate (dagpengesats). We have waived the entire amount we usually receive to administer the membership.
- The exemption from the administration fee takes effect on 1 January 2024 and is initially set for two years.
- When a member paying the graduate rate has received unemployment benefits (dagpenge) for three months (481 hours to be exact), the member will be exempt from the administration fee as of the following month.
- The exemption remains in effect until the member has been deregistered as unemployed for one month.
- Since you pay your membership fee three months in advance, we may not be able to adjust your administration fee in time if, for example, you are exempted in a quarter you have already paid for. If this happens, you will be refunded the amount afterwards

Membership fee exemption
You must usually pay a membership fee to be a member of an unemployment insurance fund. However, there are exceptions.
You must apply in writing for a membership fee exemption (kontingentfritagelse), and it can only take effect from the day we receive your application.
You must still pay us the administration fee if you are exempt from the membership fee. The cost is DKK 309 per quarter (2025). Students do not pay anything.
Expiry of unemployment benefit entitlement
You can apply for a membership fee exemption if your entitlement to unemployment benefits has expired, but you are still unemployed and registered as a jobseeker with the job centre.
You may be exempt from paying the membership fee if you:
- Do not receive financial support, such as social assistance (kontanthjælp), education allowance (uddannelsesydelse), or labour market benefits (arbejdsmarkedsydelse).
- Do not receive benefits from an unemployment insurance fund.
If you are over 50 years old when your unemployment benefit entitlement expires, any potential membership fee exemption will affect your right to early retirement benefits (efterløn).
Contact us to learn more about your options if your unemployment benefit entitlement has expired.
Imprisoned
You can be exempt from the membership fee if you have been imprisoned for more than 30 days. Contact us for more information.
