List of EEA Countries

If you live or work abroad, it may affect your membership and your entitlement to unemployment benefits or early retirement benefits with Akademikernes A-kasse.

It depends on which country you are traveling to – and whether the country is part of the European Economic Area (EEA).

What is the EEA?

EEA stands for the European Economic Area Agreement, and the countries in the EEA have common rules on, among other things, social security and unemployment insurance.

The EEA countries include:

  • All EU countries
  • Norway
  • Iceland
  • Liechtenstein
  • Switzerland (via a separate agreement)

About the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom left the EU on January 31, 2020, and is therefore no longer an EEA country. Nevertheless, certain EEA rules still apply in some situations, for example:

  • If you work and live in the United Kingdom
  • If you bring your unemployment benefits to the United Kingdom to look for work (job search period)
  • If you are a British citizen

About the Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are also not part of the EEA, but Denmark has made special agreements with the Faroe Islands.

This means:

  • You can bring your unemployment benefits to the Faroe Islands for up to 3 months to look for a job.
  • If you work in the Faroe Islands, you must be insured in the Faroese unemployment insurance – even if you are sent for a shorter period by a Danish employer.
