When You Finish Your Bachelor’s Degree

You can secure your right to unemployment benefits (dagpenge) when you get your bachelor’s degree. Here’s why it’s a good idea.

If you take a break from your master’s studies due to a leave of absence or realise you’ve chosen the wrong subject for your master’s, you may need Akademikernes A-kasse and to be eligible for unemployment benefits.

The same applies if you choose to study part of your master’s degree abroad. Master’s programmes are often more compressed and shorter abroad, which can be an issue when, after completing your studies, you need to switch status to that of a new graduate.

Already a student member?

If you’re a student member and about to finish your bachelor’s degree, remember to change your membership status from student to new graduate no later than 14 days after receiving your final grade.

On the form, you’ll be asked to:

  • provide the exact date when you finish your studies.
  • tell us if you’re continuing directly to your master’s studies.

You can continue as a free member of Akademikernes A-kasse and be eligible for unemployment benefits if you interrupt your master’s studies.

Go to the form Skift medlemsstatus fra studerende til nyuddannet on Mit AKA

Not a member yet?

If you’re not a student member yet, you should:

  • become a newly graduated bachelor member within fourteen days of receiving your final grade
  • fill out the application for membership fee exemption

After doing so, you can continue as a free member of Akademikernes A-kasse and will be eligible for unemployment benefits if you interrupt your master’s studies.

Go to Mit AKA and apply for exemption from membership fees (kontingentfritagelse)

Planning to take your master’s degree abroad?

If you want to study (part of) your master’s degree abroad, please let us know. Master’s programmes abroad are often shorter than in Denmark. This can cause problems when you finish and apply to switch your membership status to that of a new graduate.
