Terminating your membership

When you leave an unemployment insurance fund, you lose your right to unemployment benefits. If you want to switch to a different insurance fund, you should apply for a transfer instead of terminating your memebership.

You can always cancel your membership with Akademikernes A-kasse. You cancel your membership by completing and submitting the cancellation form through Mit AKA.

Terminate your membership of Akademikernes A-kasse

One-Month Resignation Notice

You must provide a one-month notice for the termination of your membership. For example, if you terminate  in October, your membership will end on December 1.

If you are a flex job employee, enrolled in the early retirement scheme, or receiving disability or social pension, different rules may apply. Please contact us for more information.

The consequences of terminating your membership

It is crucial to understand the consequences of terminating your membership and be aware of alternative options.

When you terminate your membership, you will lose your entitlement to:

  • unemployment benefits during periods of unemployment until you have been a member of an unemployment insurance fund again for at least one year and have worked for a year with an income of at least 286,632 DKK (2026). A maximum of 23,886 DKK (2026) per month can be counted.
  • take vacation using accrued holiday benefits

Alternatives to terminating your membership

You are welcome to contact us to discuss alternatives to resigning. In some cases, you may qualify for a reduced membership fee or even a full exemption from fees.

Apply to transfer to another unemployment insurance fund

If you want to leave us because you wish to join another unemployment insurance fund, it is important that you apply to transfer to the new unemployment insurance fund instead of terminating your membership with Akademikernes A-kasse.

By applying for a transfer, you will automatically retain your rights instead of having to start from scratch to earn the right to unemployment benefits. Your new unemployment insurance fund will ensure that we are notified of your transfer.

Staying abroad

If you are going to stay abroad, it is a good idea to consult us. This way, you can ensure that you are properly covered in relation to your new situation. In many cases, you can continue to be a member of Akademikernes A-kasse while you are abroad for a period of time.
