Part-Time Insurance

If you work fewer than 30 hours per week, you can opt for a part-time membership (deltidsmedlemskab). Your unemployment benefit rate (dagpengesats) will be proportionally lower.

You can save money by opting for part-time insurance, where you do not pay the full membership fee, if you work fewer than 30 hours per week or are seeking a part-time job.

If you have part-time insurance, the unemployment benefits (dagpenge) you receive when unemployed (ledig) or on early retirement (efterløn) will be lower than with full-time insurance.

The price for a part-time membership in Akademikernes A-kasse is DKK 371 per month (2025).

Its easy to switch from full-time to part-time insurance

It is always possible to switch between part-time and full-time insurance to match your needs. You can switch from full-time to part-time insurance coverage at a day’s notice. To request the change, message us via Mit AKA and let us know that you would like to switch.

You can continue to be insured full-time even if you work part-time. However, you cannot be insured on a part-time basis if you work full-time.

We will recalculate your unemployment benefit rate when you switch from full-time to part-time insurance while receiving benefits. We calculate your unemployment benefit rate based on your income for 12 months. We consider the 12 months with the highest income within the last 24 months. The average income for those 12 months minus 8% labour market contribution is called a daily work rate. You can receive up to 90% of your daily work rate in unemployment benefits.

However, you can never receive more than the highest unemployment benefit rate. Please note that there is no minimum rate. Therefore, you may risk receiving a very low unemployment benefit rate if you’ve had a very low salary.

If you’re insured with us on a part-time basis, we’ll automatically transfer you to full-time insurance if you work more than the following numbers of hours within three months:

  • 390 hours if you receive a monthly salary
  • 360 hours if you’re paid weekly or every two weeks

You are always welcome to contact us if you have any questions about your unemployment insurance.

Switch from part-time to full-time

If you want to change your part-time insurance to full-time insurance, the following requirements apply to your working hours:

  • If you are paid by the hour, you must have worked more than 360 hours within a 12-week period.
  • If you are on a monthly salary, you must have worked over 390 hours within the previous three months
Remember the 14-day rule

No later than 14 days after receiving your final grade, please update your status to ‘newly graduated full-time member’. Otherwise, you risk losing your right to unemployment benefits for at least a year.

Once you have switched to a full-time membership, you can receive full-time unemployment benefits from your first day as a newly graduated member.
