Working abroad as self-employed

If you’re self-employed in another country, you may still need to be a member of a Danish unemployment insurance fund (a-kasse). Some countries provide coverage for self-employed individuals.

It’s essential to understand the rules on unemployment insurance in the country where you’re running your business. Looking into this before you travel there is a good idea.

If you’re not adequately insured, you risk losing your eligibility for unemployment benefits (dagpenge) and your right to early retirement benefits (efterløn).

So get in touch with us if you’re thinking about setting up a business abroad.

Some countries provide coverage for self-employed individuals

In several European countries, self-employed individuals can take out unemployment insurance. If you’re running a business in one of those countries, you’ll usually need to be insured there instead.

We strongly recommend looking into the rules in the country you’re moving to – ideally before you leave Denmark and cancel your Danish unemployment insurance fund membership.

You can keep your Danish unemployment fund

If you’re self-employed in an EEA country that doesn’t offer unemployment insurance to self-employed individuals, you may be able to keep your membership of Akademikernes A-kasse.

The same applies if you’re moving to a country outside the EEA.
