Networking and LinkedIn
Networking is about good relationships that can eventually open doors. A good overview of your network can make your options more visible to you.
Mapping your network can be a great tool in your job search. Preferably, include the people closest to you (family and friends) as well as broader contacts (old schoolmates, former colleagues, people with shared interests, etc.).
Studies have shown that the latter group has the most potential. So consider reconnecting with people you’ve drifted away from over the years.
Help has to go both ways
You can’t expect people in your network to get you a job. But by asking them for advice and being available to them yourself, you increase the possibility that they will vouch for you and put in a good word for you should the opportunity arise. In short, it’s about creating value for others. Therefore, be prepared to both give and receive in the relationships you enter into.
Networking takes time
You have to be patient with your network. There’s no telling when one of your contacts might suddenly open a door for you. So, keep calm and be something for others.
Keep in touch with people – for example on social media – and make sure your job hunt isn’t all you talk about.
Networking is about creating good relationships that make people want to help you.
Most companies and job seekers are on LinkedIn. So, make sure your online CV is up to date so it stands out when employers and recruiters view your profile.
LinkedIn has hundreds of millions of users worldwide, and around two million people in Denmark have a profile. Managers, HR people and recruiters often use the medium very actively in their search for employees, so LinkedIn is an essential tool in your job hunt.
Show off your skills
Think of your profile as a living CV where you continuously add skills, recommendations, job descriptions, links, etc. Use the right keywords and begin with a strong profile text that briefly describes who you are. Profiles with professional photos get more attention, so get the look right and always assume that a potential employer will study your LinkedIn profile closely.
Organise your network
LinkedIn also allows you to develop and nurture your network. Here, you can get an overview of your connections; who works where and who might be able to help you in your job search. Go ahead and reach out to people but remember that ’networking’ is not just asking about job opportunities. You need to cultivate and nurture your relationships so that both parties benefit.
