Valid reasons for unemployment

If you have a valid reason for quitting your job, or declining an offer of active employment measure, you are not considered to be voluntarily unemployed, and therefore, you will not face a quarantine .

Valid reasons include:

  • Health issues
  • Change in commuting time
  • Family care issues
  • Spouse or partner relocates for work
  • Expiration of the period for which you are eligible for supplementary unemployment benefits
  • Employer's refusal to sign a release certificate
  • Care for a child with a disability or serious illness
  • Care for a dying relative
  • Issues at the workplace, e.g., non-payment of wages
  • Securing employment of at least 5 weeks duration
  • Starting education lasting at least 1 year
  • Military service and similar obligations

Please contact us before you quit your job or decline an offer from the job centre.

Even if you have a valid reason, you must still be available for the labour market  to receive unemployment benefits. Additionally, there are specific rules for each of the valid reasons, always contact us before quitting or declining an offer, such as activation.
