You're Employment Has Been Terminated

Avoid quarantine (karantæne) from unemployment benefits (dagpenge) after termination. A correct notice period (opsigelsesperiode) affects your eligibility for unemployment benefits (dagpengeret)

If you are terminated from your job, quarantine from unemployment benefits is the last thing you need. First, check whether you have been given the notice period to which you are entitled.

If you accept a notice period that is too short, you will be considered voluntarily unemployed (selvforskyldt ledig) and will face a three-week quarantine before receiving unemployment benefits.

Additionally, refer to our guide for newly unemployed individuals, which provides step-by-step instructions on what to do when you become unemployed.

Step-by-step instructions on what to do when you become unemployed.

Check your notice period (opsigelsesperiode)

You can check if your notice period is correct in one of the following ways:

  • Contact your trade union. They can assist you in checking whether your notice period, holiday allowance, pension, etc., have been correctly calculated.
  • If you’re not a trade union member, you can seek assistance from your workplace union representative.
  • Check the notice periods in your collective agreement or employment contract.

Please note that as an unemployment insurance fund (a-kasse), we cannot get involved in disputes over insufficient notice periods. Still, we can assess whether the notice period is correct. Any disputes must be handled by a trade union, as unemployment insurance funds are not authorised to offer advice or become involved in such matters.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us by chat or phone.

Your employer pays for your first few days of unemployment

If you have been terminated, you can receive unemployment benefits from your first day of unemployment. Your employer is responsible for paying the first two days of unemployment – unemployment benefit compensation (G-dage). Your employer’s responsibility to pay the first two days of unemployment also applies if you’ve been dismissed from work, completed a temporary position, or finished an assignment or fixed-term contract.

To qualify, you must have worked at least 74 hours in the past four weeks, and you must not be on holiday or registered as sick.

Freelancers must meet specific requirements. Call us if you are in doubt.

Your employer must pay the unemployment benefit compensation (G-dage) within two payroll periods following your termination.

If your employer fails to pay, you should contact Akademikernes A-kasse. We can help you ensure that your employer pays the unemployment benefit compensation.

You are not considered unemployed until your notice period is over

If you have a notice period, you will only be considered unemployed once it has ended.

This applies even if your employer has put you on gardening leave (fritstillet), meaning that you and your employer have agreed that you do not need to work during the notice period.
