Step-by-step: What to do when you become unemployed

There are many things to keep track of when you’ve just become unemployed (ledig). Here’s an overview of what you must remember to do during your first days of unemployment.

1. Register as unemployed on jobnet.dk

On your first day of unemployment, you must register as unemployed on jobnet.dk – even if it is a public holiday.

You must be registered as an unemployment benefit recipient (dagpengemodtager) to be eligible for unemployment benefits (dagpenge).

You are not eligible for unemployment benefits if you are registered without benefits or receiving social assistance (kontanthjælp).

Go to jobnet.dk

2. Apply for unemployment benefits with us

You need to fill out an application for unemployment benefits (ledighedserklæring). You can find it on the forms page when you are logged in.

You must fill out a benefit card (ydelseskort) at Mit AKA every month. On the benefit card, you must write if you have been working, been sick, on holiday, had an income, etc.

The benefit card can be filled out one week before the end of the month.

Your unemployment benefits will be paid once we receive your benefit card. If you have sent us the benefit card a week before the end of the month, we will pay your unemployment benefits on the last working day of the month.

You have one month and ten days after the end of the month to complete the benefit card. After that, the period becomes outdated, and you will no longer be eligible for unemployment benefits for that month.

3. Fill out Min Plan before the Intro Meeting

During your first days of unemployment, you’ll receive a letter on Mit AKA with information on when and where to attend your first meeting with us, the Intro Meeting.

At the Intro Meeting, you’ll get an introduction to the unemployment insurance fund (a-kasse), and we’ll tell you how you can use us as your strategic partner during your time as unemployed – and, of course, when you’ve found a job. We’ll introduce you to our various membership offers, and if you have any questions about the unemployment benefits rules, we’ll answer them.

Before the meeting, you need to fill out Min Plan on Mit AKA, where you will provide us with information about your job search. Min Plan is what we use to advise you on your job search.

Go to Min Plan

Build your CV on jobnet.dk

On jobnet.dk, you also need to create a CV. You must do this before your Intro Meeting with no later than two weeks after registering as unemployed. You must remember to activate your CV.

We will review your CV, and you will receive a message from us when it is approved. For us to approve your CV, you must describe:

  • which jobs you are applying for;
  • your qualifications (fill in the field, even if it is not a mandatory field on jobnet.dk);
  • your previous jobs;
  • your educational background.

In addition, write your contact details so employers can get in touch with you. As a minimum, include your postcode and phone number or email address so an employer knows where you live and how to contact you.

You must remember to activate your CV.

When jobnet.dk has notified us that you have registered as unemployed on jobnet.dk, you can log in to Mit AKA and find a checklist at the top of the page where we have gathered the essential information about what you need to remember as newly unemployed.

You probably have many questions about the rules and job search when you’ve just become unemployed. You can also find answers to many of your questions in our guide for unemployed people.
